Live Coverage: 'Doctor Who' at Comic-Con: Panel live blog
Live Coverage:
Waaaah. Digital Spy has been awake for hours queuing for this, but it's going to be totally worth it - we're about to see the Doctor Who panel in Comic-Con's legendary Hall H!
Not only are Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman showing their faces, but so is Adventure in Space and Time star David Bradley, plus execs Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. Will we get any 50th anniversary scoop? Or more on Matt's exit? Here's hoping! Join us from 12.30pm PT / 3.30pm ET / 8.30pm BST as we find out...
13:31Yep, that's a wrap for that very entertaining Doctor Who panel. Um, can we watch the anniversary special now, please?
13:28The sonic screwdrivers are back in the air and there's a standing ovation as we say goodbye to our lovely panel. We finish with Craig's hilarious Doctor Who song on the big screen!
13:27Steven says they wouldn't ever do "gore" in Doctor Who. "It's not so much a rule as a house style," he says, explaining they just kill people "discreetly and nicely"! Marcus says they want to scare kids, but not disturb them.
13:26Steven says Doctor Who is meant to be frightening - that's what makes kids enjoy something or not. But Steven admits he's not good with scary stuff - even Mark's documentaries are too much for him!
13:25Everyone is kind of baffled by the Weeping Angel action figures - they dub them "inaction figures". Matt says Steven's got a Weeping Angel in his garden that he loves - and he wanted to put it in Steven's neighbour's garden to creep him out.
13:24Matt says he likes the monsters that chase you... then changes his mind and says he likes the psychological ones!
13:25Everyone is kind of baffled by the Weeping Angel action figures - they dub them "inaction figures". Matt says Steven's got a Weeping Angel in his garden that he loves - and he wanted to put it in Steven's neighbour's garden to creep him out.
13:23The next fan says they're "proud" of Matt for making the "hard decision" to leave. But as for her question - if they could create their own alien monster to battle, what would it be like? "Mine would be really big," Matt says. Jenna is picturing lots of arms. "Like a Buddha alien?" Matt asks.
13:22Steven also likes a flirtatious scene in 'Day of the Moon' - "The Doctor's so bad at flirting! He's like, 'Ooh, the lady's flirting with me!'"
13:22The next fan says one of her favourite characters is River Song - to huge cheers. So what are the panel's favourite River Song moments? Matt loves the scene when he's walking back and she kisses him: "She's so flowery and camp!" Steven says he loves the moment The Doctor says goodbye to her - because it's the first time he grabs someone with "lustful intent".
13:20"We've now got exactly one question everyone's going to ask," Steven jokes. "'Will Matt Smith sign me as well?'"
13:20The next fan has created a special 11th Doctor jacket out of eleven swag bags. He wants Matt to sign it - so Matt tells him to jump on to the stage so he can do it! Craig provides a little musical accompaniment in the meantime...
13:19Steven says it's "witless and pointless" to think about what other people want from Doctor Who - he can only write for what he would like. He knows he's done it right if he wants to wipe his brain so he can watch it without knowing what happens!
13:18Matt wants to know how many people here watch the show illegally - just so they know. There are a lot of cheers! "That's a wake-up call to everyone working in television," Craig jokes.
13:18Craig suggests that the audience for Doctor Who in America is younger than in the UK. "We seem to get more of the 20-somethings here," Steven says. When the crowd whoops, he's baffled: "You're cheering a decade of your life!" Anyway, he says the 20-somethings kind of drift away in the UK and then come back later.
13:17The next question - if they could take the TARDIS back in time to a moment in their lives, what would it be? "Wowza," Matt gasps. "It's a deeply personal question that," Steven says. "So let's have it." Matt says some answers he can't give in a room of 7000 people!
13:16David says that hopefully one day he'll be able to tell his grandchildren he was the Doctor. "For me, that's enough," he says. It's very nice. As for Mark, he'd like to be Jo Grant!
13:15The next audience member asks which character from the Doctor Who series they would play. Matt says Martha - to huge cheers! "It's alternative and it's quite meaty," he says. Jenna goes for Strax, and Steven says of course he'd want to be The Doctor! David says he had such a good time on 'Dinosaurs on a Spaceship' - he got a "shiver" when he saw the TARDIS. So he was thrilled to get to play The Doctor (kind of...)
13:13A fan says she'll cry when Matt lives. "Oh, you will," Steven promises. But did he draw any inspiration from the Cartmel Masterplan? Not really, to be honest. But Steven likes that The Doctor is powerful and mysterious and "a bit remote".
13:12Matt basically has too many memories to name! Mark says he loved getting Diana Rigg in the show - and especially the moment she pulled back her dress. "It's something I never thought I'd see on television," he says.
13:12What was the panel's favourite moment from filming season seven? Steven has one - he says he liked all the Daleks sitting in a room when they made 'Asylum of the Daleks'. "That was brilliant!" he chuckles. Jenna says she had a great time filming 'The Snowmen'.
13:10How do American fans differ from British fans? In volume, apparently! "You're louder, which is great," Matt smiles.
13:10Matt says that if they see a Doctor and a Clara at Comic-Con, they wind down their car window to say hello. Yesterday when they did it, the guy didn't recognise them!
13:09A fan wants to know what impact Doctor Who has had on their lives, giving Matt an opportunity to give a heartfelt thanks to fans. Jenna says she's thrilled by the "magic" of everything and she praises the effort people have gone to with their Doctor and Clara costumes.
13:09Why isn't Captain Jack in the 50th special? "How do you know what is or is not in the 50th?" Steven jokes, though he says not everyone can be in the special. But he does say: "I've lied my arse off for months - you know nothing, so don't make presumptions." But he does say that there has to be a good story reason to bring back Jack. That's as clear as mud then.
13:07The subject of casting comes up - does Steven have any news? Steven seems to suggest it's not a done deal yet.
13:06Steven says The Doctor doesn't know he's a hero and would be surprised to find out there's a show about him: "He's just larking about."
13:06What are the adjectives Steven uses to describe The Doctor. "He has lots of different faces but he's always the same," Steven says. He adds that he lives in the moment all the time and never looks back - because he'd kind of get stuck! "He's every age at once as well - he's a child, he's a stroppy teenager, he's a middle-aged bore, he's a grumpy old man." He thinks Matt combined the "old man" and the "child" brilliantly.
13:05Will the Doctor Who Experience come to America? Matt says they could have talks - or everyone could just fly to Cardiff ("It rains a lot though.")
13:04Does Steven like doing the "historicals" - going back to a real time? Steven says he gets other writers to do those: "It involves research," he explains. He adds that he did a couple when Russell T Davies was the boss. He didn't like the research. "It's Doctor Who, it's made up, and I have to read a book about frocks."
13:02Will the cast ever shoot another episode in America? Matt says he'd love to film the Christmas special there! Meanwhile, Steven says he'd be up for it if they could think of a good story. Mark suggests an alien invasion at Comic-Con - because "who would know"? That does actually sound great.
13:01We're on to fan questions now - the first fan reveals that Doctor Who helped her get through her battle with bone cancer. But she wants to know their favourite scenes from the last season? Matt says he loves the start of 'The Name of the Doctor' where Clara sees all the other Doctors. Jenna agrees!
12:59Yeah, so that trailer - short but OH MY GOD it was sweet. There were several points at which the audience squealed with unconfined joy. And the claps go on for ages afterwards. "You have seen nothing, trust me," Steven teases.
12:57Ahh, I'm super excited - we're about to see the 50th anniversary trailer! Yikes! Steven's giving us a very stern speech about not uploading it online so I'm going to have to go dark and keep the content a very closely guarded secret.
12:56Jenna thinks the Doctor is a bit "asexual" at times - Craig thinks the audience might disagree!
12:55Do Matt and Jenna look back at David Tennant and Billie Piper's chemistry? Matt says David is playing "the same man" but each actor has a different emotional background. "Dave is sort of more swashbuckly with the ladies," he says, but Matt's Doctor is more "flummoxed" - River is the "ultimate alien"! But he does joke that his Doctor has a better chance of snogging Clara!
12:54Matt and Jenna say they're both excited about going back to film. Matt adds that he's "proud" of what he's achieved, and he wants to make the Christmas special "a real belter". "No pressure!" Steven jokes. "I'm on page 22."
12:53Waah - we're going to get to see the 50th anniversary trailer! You guessed it, there are big cheers. So did Steven know what he was going to do, or was he flying by the seat of his pants? "A lot of it's improvisation to be honest," he says - but he has been setting up things for a long time that will be resolved in the 50th. But he does say the newest idea is often the most fun.
12:52Mark says it was "spooky" how much everyone in the drama looked like the original actors.
12:52The trailer looks really great - it looks like such a loving tribute to the show. But did they use any old artefacts in the show? Mark says there was an old brass pillar in the original TARDIS - and they were able to find the originals! Mark says the whole project was filled with coincidences like that.
12:49David's joking about his Game of Thrones role - "The wedding invitations have dried up!" But here we go with a trailer for Adventure.
12:48David says he remembers watching William Hartnell - it's what he did every Saturday evening. "The pub had to wait!" he jokes.
12:48We're hearing about An Adventure in Space and Time. Mark says Doctor Who is like "mother's milk" - an unlikely group of people came together to create the show, so he really wanted to tell the story. And he says David "brilliantly" plays William Hartnell.
12:47Craig's asking about the loss of Amy and Rory - "They died in their 80s, how much more merciful could I be?" Steven asks. But does he feel a sense of responsibility? "Of course you do, but no you don't, you just feel unbelievably excited," he says. "I get to do Doctor Who - even if I do it badly, that's cool!" He says it's been the "thrill of a lifetime" and he's still a fan - even if it wrecks every day of his year!
12:46The crowd just chanted "Thank you Matt" in unison - this show really does have some of the best fans.
12:45We've just been treated to a rather fantastic recap trailer, and yes, we might have teared up a little bit. "That's exciting, isn't it?" Matt grins.
12:40Craig wants to welcome Jenna to the panel (and a life of "getting followed around by creepy people") so she gets some great applause.
12:39Here come our panellists, anyway - Marcus Wilson, Mark Gatiss, David Bradley, Steven Moffat ("the bastard that killed Amy and Rory", according to Craig), and, of course, Jenna Coleman (who is just CUTE AS A BUTTON) and Matt Smith! Matt jumps on to the stage and flashes his trademark peace sign. The crowd, obviously, goes wild.
12:37"If the right question is asked, the Silence will fall," Craig jokes, to oohs from the crowd. He adds: "The people waiting for the Sons of Anarchy panel are very confused."
12:36The panel begins with a montage of clips from Doctor Who over the years - complete with a dubstep version of the theme tune! And here's our host for the panel, the very funny Craig Ferguson.
12:33Waaah! The lights are going dark which can only mean one thing - we're about to start. The squeals are absolutely deafening!
12:32There are sonic screwdrivers being held in the air! Who needs lighters?
12:30A Comic-Con official came out to tell us not to record the footage (wheeee!) and even he got screams. People have been camping out since yesterday afternoon for this Doctor Who panel, so unsurprisingly, there is some serious excitement going on. There's clapping again!
12:24We've still got about SIX MINUTES to go until the start of the panel, but we just had a bout of spontaneous clap-chanting. The atmosphere in this room is going to be ridiculous.
